Keeping good company

Honored to be bookended this way in Wayne State University Press’ Woodward Avenue windows. The innovative “The Lake Michigan Mermaid” by Linda Nemec Foster and Anne-Marie Oomen, illustrations by Meridith Ridl, and Michael G. Smith’s “Designing Detroit” are the best kind of company to keep.

Journalist and educator, I have spent more than half my career recruiting and developing media professionals for some of the largest news operations in the country. With the guiding principle that diverse thought and perspectives make the best content, I became coaching editor and teacher who focuses on careers. I am a relational recruiter who follows people as they grow, rather than one who just fills positions. I get a big kick out of helping people achieve their ambitions and surprise themselves. I believe that demanding and fulfilling challenges make us do our best. Multimedia journalism and book-length projects are some of the challenges that keep me going. I have authored more than half a dozen books. The latest is "The Faygo Book," about an iconic Detroit bottler, coming out of Wayne State University Press in October 2018. My students produce multimedia books, too, and have published more than a dozen. I assemble diverse teams for all my books and projects.
